Managing Director for Helio International in Paris

Job Description


HELIO International is looking for an innovative person to take a lead role in a small but active not-for-profit organisation and help chart the course for future activities throughimplementation and development of HELIO’s new guiding strategy. The Managing Director will support HELIO’s overarching mission to enable development for all through well-managed clean energy services, and promote HELIO’s four guiding principles of ecodevelopment, clean energy, climate stabilisation and participatory governance.

Under the guidance of HELIO’s Board of Administration, s/he will play a central role in generating and executing projects, as well as in motivating excellent work and commitment among the rest of the HELIO team. With the support of the rest of the HELIO team, the Managing Director will ensure the financial viability and smooth functioning of HELIO International and maintain HELIO’s important role of bringing essential energy issues into development and climate discussions.
Main duties
  • Prepare an annual work plan and funding strategy for Board approval, building on objectives and values expressed in existing strategic documents
  • Oversee and assist in the implementation of HELIO projects to ensure the timely and high quality execution and provide technical assistance to project leaders and consultants
  • Promote the work of HELIO International through appropriate ecodevelopment, energy and climate forums (in particular UNFCCC COP meetings),
  • networks and other media.
  • Establish and maintain productive relationships with government agencies and other energy, climate and development related institutions and identify project and funding partners to support HELIO’s future work
  • Ensure a common vision, ensure smooth flow of information and provide strategic guidance to the HELIO team in the performance of their respective functions
  • Maintain regular contact with the Executive Committee and work with the Secretary and the Treasurer to ensure that commitments and obligations of the organisation are duly met in a timely manner.

Working conditions

  • Initial fixed term contract (CDD) for 1 year, with possibility of renewal
  • Salary to be adjusted based on experience
  • Office provided inside Paris
  • Frequent travel within Europe and other regions, in particular in Africa

Minimum qualifications and competencies

Advanced university degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, international relations, or engineering) Good understanding of the energy and development issues Substantial experience with economic and policy analysis of national international issues Excellent organisational and project management skills including team management Excellent writing and speaking skills in both French and English Strong initiative and ability to generate ideas and solve problems creatively Strong networking and communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain contacts at senior level


Preferred competencies

  • 3 years experience in managing a team with a demonstrated ability to motivate staff and supervise delegated work with good results
  • Excellent level of computer literacy
  • Experience of working in an NGO environment
